Digital Competency in the ARTS

Arts education provides a unique opportunity to blend creativity with digital tools, enhancing students’ abilities to express themselves while developing essential 21st-century skills. By incorporating technology, students can explore animation, graphic design, digital music production, and virtual galleries, allowing for broader creative expression and access to diverse art forms. Digital competency in arts fosters critical thinking, problem-solving, and the use of technology tools to explore, create, and share art within a global context.

How and When to Include Technology

Technology should be thoughtfully integrated into arts education to enhance—not replace—traditional methods. Use digital tools to introduce new forms of expression, such as digital painting or music composition software. Leverage technology during brainstorming (e.g., using mind-mapping apps), execution (e.g., animation software), and reflection (e.g., video journals or digital portfolios). Focus on projects that align with curriculum goals and student interests, ensuring that the use of tech enriches the creative process and outcomes without overwhelming the experience.

Tech-Tastic Teaching Tip

Introduce digital portfolios for students to document and reflect on their work. Students can:

  • Record videos of their dramatic monologues or dance rehearsals.
  • Upload sound clips of music compositions.
  • Add images of visual artworks.

Encourage them to annotate their entries with insights about their creative process, challenges, and inspirations. This creates a comprehensive portfolio that fosters self-awareness and digital fluency.
