Innovative Projects Related to Digital Technologies

The following projects were developed by English School Boards from across the province of Quebec. We are pleased to present an overview of these projects and hope they will inspire you.

All of the below projects were funded through Mesure 15081, “Digital Technology Innovation Projects”. The goal of Mesure 15081 funding is to provide professional development opportunities for teachers on the pedagogical use of technology in the classroom. It also aims to finance innovative educational projects related to information and communication technologies (ICT).

1) Integrating Robotics into Elementary School Classrooms

Western Quebec School Board

The aim of this project is to integrate robotics and programming into the elementary school curriculum in a meaningful way. The teachers will be able to create a plan that includes robotics throughout the students’ primary education, in several disciplines.

2) Integrating Robotics Iinto the Classroom

Lester B. Pearson School Board

This project aims to help teachers familiarize themselves with robotics and age-appropriate robots. In particular, it emphasizes the value of integration, as well as how to make good use of technology and integrate it into the rest of the curriculum and into the students’ lives in general.

3) Application of the Micro:bit Program in the Health and Wellness Course

New Frontiers School Board

This project aims to diversify traditional teaching methods in the Health and Wellness course by integrating Micro:bit technology with 5th and 6th grade students. Teachers need professional development opportunities to acquire knowledge about Micro:bit and the corresponding pedagogy.

1) Differentiation and inclusion through technology

Eastern Shores School Board

The project aims to increase teachers’ knowledge and skills in robotics, coding and assistive technologies, in a variety of disciplines, to help them deliver differentiated instruction for the benefit of at-risk students in particular.. Participating teachers will integrate coding and/or assistive technologies into their lessons, using a variety of online educational resources and educational software with a game component. Using technological tools, they will create new ways of assessing their students’ success in terms of competency, knowledge and social development.

2) DAP (Digital Action Plan) super-users

The DAP (Digital Action Plan) Super-users project is part of a process undertaken in 2019 in our Adult Sector to implement a digital learning environment that meets needs while promoting students’ educational success. The next step is to transform the implementation of the mandate to extend the project to all the orientations of the Digital Action Plan by creating a team of super users who will serve as multiplier agents in their environment by playing the role of coach, ambassador and facilitator in various projects involving technology.

3) DERs in languages for students in the adult sector

More and more students are experiencing language difficulties or low literacy levels. This project aims to gather/organize digital educational resources (DERs) aimed at improving the language skills of students enrolled in AGE and VT at ETSB. These resources will be accessible via our learning platform. This need for this project was demonstrated during needs assessment for the accessibility project. It was also demonstrated by the Institut de la statistique du Québec in the report Les compétences en littératie, en numératie et en résolution de problèmes dans des environnements technologiques : des clefs pour relever les défis du XXIe siècle / Rapport québécois du Programme pour l’évaluation internationale des compétences des adultes (PEICA).

4) New pedagogical approaches: Maintaining collaboration and communication with the Office 365 suite (Microsoft TEAMS and OneNote)

In this project, teachers will develop their own digital competence and continue to learn how to use the various tools available in the Office 365 Suite in a techno-pedagogical way, specifically the Microsoft Teams learning management system and the note-taking program, OneNote. They will also be able to explore how these tools can be used to give students the opportunity to familiarize themselves with these dimensions of the digital competency: communicating, collaborating and harnessing the potential of digital resources for learning.

5) Co-creation of resources for the development of digital citizenship in the classroom

This project aims to align the school board’s digital citizenship program with the continuum designed in 2010 to foster the safe, ethical and responsible use of technology, and with the Digital Competency Framework, and to create classroom resources and development opportunities to support the intentional acquisition of digital citizenship, in conjunction with other dimensions of digital competency that are explicitly linked to subject-specific and cross-curricular content and competencies. They will also work together to create classroom resources that support this goal.

6) Create new opportunities for the use of technology in the classroom and for transdisciplinary learning

New Frontiers School Board

This project aims to diversify teaching strategies and transform traditional activities to include robotics and coding in the curriculum. The aim is also to develop an elective course for Cycle 1 students so that they can benefit from enrichment in this area. This will require professional development for teachers.

1) Take 2 | Sharing Technopedagogical Knowledge! 

Eastern Townships School Board

This project is designed to promote the sharing and transfer of techno-pedagogical knowledge between members of adult and vocational education teams. We want to create sustainable communities of collaboration to bring out experts who’re capable of innovating and sharing practices related to online evaluation, instructional design, student engagement, and practical online/distance learning activities.

2) Accessibility for All | How to put every adult learner at the heart of their learning

Eastern Townships School Board

This project aims to facilitate access to digital learning resources by implementing a universal welcome and support process for vocational and general adult education students enrolled in the school board. The project involves selecting digital resources that will be offered to all students, making them available in online learning environments regardless of delivery mode, and ensuring that students and staff are trained in their use. Ultimately, the vision is to make every adult learner self-sufficient in the use of digital resources in their academic and professional lives.

3)  Creative Coding to Teach Curriculum

Eastern Shores School Board

The goal of the project is to develop the digital competency and skills of Cycle 1 teachers. They will learn how to use programming and robotics in different disciplines. The teachers involved in this project will integrate programming into their planning by using different digital educational resources and software. They will collaborate and create learning activities that integrate programming and different skills related to core subjects.

4) Transforming Teaching in Plumbing and Heating

Lester B. Pearson School Board

This project aims to transform traditional teaching activities into self-supporting activities on the school’s digital learning platform. By enriching their digital practices and diversifying teaching strategies, teachers will be able to enhance the training that they’re offering to students.

5) Interactive Outdoor Classroom

Sir-Wilfrid-Laurier School Board

Elementary 3 students will collaborate to create a sustainable website associated with an existing outdoor classroom. Teachers will work on the skills required to research information, build a website and update it. They will also be asked to use QR codes that will be linked to specific information on the website. The QR codes will be waterproofed and installed throughout the outdoor classroom to provide students and the community with information about the local environment.

6) Moving ahead with our robots!

Riverside School Board

Six teachers will form a learning community to develop their skills in teaching digital literacy. They will develop activities that are connected to essential subjects and knowledge that also incorporate the robots that were purchased by our school board in 2019. The teachers will have the chance to grow together through moments of planning, doing, reflecting, and adjusting.

7) JAMotron

Riverside School Board

In this video game design project, students will be asked to apply the principles of design. First, they will first learn about the principles of design (outside of a digital setting), with a tabletop game, and then they will reinvest their knowledge when creating their own video games using Construct 3. In teams, students will think, plan, create and program different levels of a game.

1) CQSB Digital Fair

Digital citizenship is a topic that many teachers would like to address in their classrooms. Students are often reluctant to discuss this topic because they think that their teachers are out of touch with their realities. So why not ask the students to become experts? 

In this project, Secondary 1 students researched different facets of digital citizenship and presented their findings to their peers using technology. Finally, they hosted a digital exhibition for parents, teachers, and elementary Cycle 3 students in their school.

2) Learn To Code and Then Code To

This project aimed to develop and support teachers with integrating programming and robotics in different disciplines. Participating teachers were encouraged to explore and incorporate various online educational resources and software in their classrooms (e.g. Scratch, CODE, STEM, etc.). They collaborated to create tasks and learning situations that integrated programming and robotics into core subjects such as math, science, and English.

3) Integrating Technology into the Elementary Core Curriculum

Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board

This project involved integrating technology into planning, not as a superficial tool, but as a way to develop digital competency. 

The goal of this project was to nurture technology skills that students may need be competitive in the future workforce. Through small monthly workshops, teachers experimented with different technologies and their educational uses. They created and implemented meaningful and relevant lesson plans to enrich student learning and encourage students to become familiar with different technological tools.

4) Digital Instruction in Carpentry & Woodworking

New Frontiers School Board

This project aimed to improve online instruction. The goal was to make classroom learning more accessible online (at home or in workshops) and explore hybrid teaching approaches. 

Students who have access to instruction at home can come to school with a good knowledge of the subject and a certain autonomy. They are capable of proceeding at their own pace because they can consult digital classroom resources. The students become more autonomous. The results of the pilot project were very encouraging. 

5) Shifting Practice Towards Blended Learning

Eastern Townships School Board

The objective of this project was to shift practice towards a blended learning approach. Two groups of teachers (3rd cycle and secondary) explored blended learnings models and tools. The teachers had opportunities to try new practices with their students to find out what best meets their needs. Blended learning classrooms will be well-positioned if a transition to online learning is necessary in the future.

6) Interactions

Eastern Shores School Board

With this project, all FGA and PS teachers were taught how to create and organize their course content on Moodle. They were grouped by subject and program. They collaborated to learn how to create interactive content with H5P so that they will pass on their learning to their students. All four FGA and FP centers were involved.

7) On Go, We Share Our Pedagogical Knowledge!

How can we develop sustainable collaboration skills so that students and educators can cope with constant digital and pedagogical changes?

This project involved creating communities of practice. These communities discussed collaborative practices. The goal of the project is to create engaging training environments for students, whatever their profile and objective.

1) Bookworms

Riverside School Board

This project focused on designing and developing a new web platform. The contents of the platform were created by elementary students to support and encourage reading in French. 

Students were asked to reading texts and then share information about their favorite texts using the platform. Cycle 2 students also filmed capsules that were showcased on the web platform.

 In the capsules, the students presented different children’s authors and their books. They talked about their favorite parts of the texts and shared reading tips and tricks with others.

2) Digital Citizenship Education

This project contributed to ongoing teacher training on the use of technology. Teachers were given time to engage with digital citizenship content. Collaboration between teachers was an essential aspect of this project. We wanted teachers to feel equipped and ready to reinvest their learning into their regular classroom practice.

3) Digital Shift

Eastern Townships School Board

This project aimed to support teachers in the integration of digital technology in the classroom. It contributed to teacher training on the use of technology. It focused specifically on digital citizenship tools and resources.

4) The 21st Century Connected Cooking Lab

In vocational training, the vast majority of instructional hours take place in an authentic environment, i.e., in hairdressing labs, carpentry shops, kitchens, etc. The students

spend little time in traditional classrooms. The goal of this project was to equip these authentic environments with digital devices. All labs were equipped with TV screens and communication devices to bring digital technology into the heart of vocational training.

5) PEC Innovative Technologies in Learning

The clientele of our professional education center has become younger in recent years. The goal of this project was to incorporate more digital technology into our teaching and learning practices to promote student engagement in the classroom.

1) BYOD Implementation Project

In order to support the implementation of the BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) approach in schools located on the greater territory of the school board, the RECIT consultant travelled to different locations to support teachers with the integration of new technologies in their classroom. Many teachers were released so they could share their experience and resources in the BYOD context. Since many students did not have devices of their own, the RECIT consultant and teachers made use of existing school Nexus tablets, iPads and Chromebooks. This allowed them to implement a hybrid version of a BYOD philosophy, while not excluding any students from being able to participate. The focus was not on a particular device, rather creating an openness for students to use the device that best suited a learning situation.

2) DDO Loops into Coding

Central Québec School Board

All of Dollard-des-Ormeaux school, meaning a total of 606 students from K to Secondary 5, as well as parents and teachers were involved in this project. The goal of the project was to offer 2 to 4 hours of programming in class so that students could learn the basics of programming (Beebots, Kodable, FixTheFactory, CodeMonkey, Scratch). Students could then pursue their learning using free programming apps and programs. Teacher training was offered and parents were informed about the project during an evening information session.

3) Leading Library

Riverside School Board

The 15081 project funding allowed the Riverside school board to release 40 teachers and librarians for two days. During these days, they were able to participate in discussions on the role of the library and the technology needed to support student learning. A learning community was created to explore the use of technology integration to better support the development of the Reading competency in English and in French.

4) One Size Does NOT Fit All

Central Québec School Board

This project involved 12 elementary and 2 high school teachers. Students were then invited to participate in the project during the second and third training sessions. The goal of the project was to allow teachers to become familiar with the SAMR model and to support the development of teaching skills for integrating technology in the classroom. The fact that students took part in the training sessions had a very strong impact as it developed a positive collaboration between the students and their teachers.
